![]() What is Chiropractic Care? Chiropractic is a distinct philosophy, art, and science dedicated to the improvement and maintenance of health by dealing with spinal misalignments called vertebral subluxations. Subluxations (small misalignments) of bones in the spine may disrupt the transmission of information over the nerves and reduce the body's ability to maintain good health through its system of cells, tissues, and organs. The vertebrae protect the spinal cord and brain stem while also moving enough to allow all types of motion. When these bones are out of proper alignment, they may press on nerves which they are supposed to protect. This pressing (or pinching) of nerves may disrupt the proper function of the body. This disruption may cause problems such as pain, dis-ease, and serious illness. Chiropractors are highly trained in the specialized skill of locating, analyzing, and correcting vertebral subluxations. Chiropractors use gentle, specific movements of the spinal bones to help the body restore proper alignment of the vertebrae. The Chiropractic adjustment is different from any other form of manipulation given by any other healthcare provider. The art of specific spinal adjustment is practiced and developed continuously within the Chiropractic community so that Doctors of Chiropractic may provide the most precise and beneficial care possible. Chiropractic Care began with a deaf janitor... Modern chiropractic care was founded in 1895 by Daniel Palmeer, a holistic practitioner with a clinic in Davenport, Iowa. The clinic's janitor had been deaf for 17 years. Upon inquiring about his condition, Palmer examined him and noticed a bump indicating to him a misaligned vertebra. Upon the application of an "adjustment" to realign his spine, the janitor regained the full hearing. |
